Buying Your First EV? Get Your Home Ready Before Delivery Day

By ArcRay September 26, 2026

Your first electric vehicle is on its way—but is your home ready to charge it? Preparing before delivery gives you time to choose suitable equipment, arrange an electrical assessment and book installation.

For Ontario homeowners, these five steps can help make the move to electric driving smoother.

1. Plan Where You Will Park and Charge

Start with your everyday parking spot. Will you charge in a garage or on the driveway? Check where the vehicle’s charging port is located and whether the charger’s cable will comfortably reach it.

Choose a location that keeps the cable away from walking routes. For outdoor installations, discuss equipment suitability and placement with your installer, including access when snow builds up. If parking is shared or part of a condominium property, check permissions before arranging work.

2. Confirm Charger Compatibility Before Buying

Check your vehicle’s exact model and model year before ordering charging equipment. Confirm the connector type, maximum AC charging rate and whether charging equipment is included with the vehicle.

A higher-output charger does not automatically mean faster charging: the vehicle’s onboard charging capability also limits speed. Manufacturer guidance can help you match the equipment to your vehicle.

Share your typical daily driving distance and overnight parking time with your installer. These details help guide a practical charging setup.

3. Book an Electrical Assessment

Before committing to equipment, have a Licensed Electrical Contractor assess your home’s electrical capacity and proposed charger location.

Ontario’s Electrical Safety Authority advises homeowners to confirm their electrical panel can accommodate the additional load. An assessment helps establish whether changes are needed before installation.

For the initial enquiry, prepare your vehicle details, photos of the closed electrical panel and pictures of the proposed parking location. Ask what further information the contractor needs to provide an accurate quote.

4. Check Ontario’s Installation Requirements

If you hire someone for electrical work in Ontario, they must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor with an ECRA/ESA licence.

ESA states that EV charger installations require an electrical notification, commonly called a permit, before work starts. Choose equipment carrying a recognized Canadian approval mark, and request the ESA Certificate of Acceptance once the completed work has been accepted.

5. Schedule Installation Ahead of Delivery

Request a written quote that identifies equipment, electrical work, notification fees and any additional work required. Confirm the expected schedule and whether anything could affect completion.

Before handover, ask for a demonstration of the charger’s operation, cable storage and any available scheduling features. Keep the equipment instructions and installation documents together for future reference.
